Demonstration Classes: Physical World
Hilje Nurmsalu
Environment Protection (geography for grade 8)
Introduction
Natural resources that a human being needs for living (air, water, earth, plants, animals) are self-restoring natural resources. But if the mankind makes a very intensive use of these resources, the environment wont be able to protect itself. People have to follow their activities very closely to avoid harmful effect on the environment as much as possible. So, we have to live and economise, only in this way the next generations will have everything they need for their life.
The class was made of the following parts:
Getting to know the program (10 minutes)
Independent work based on a worksheet (30 minutes)
Getting to know the program (10 minutes)
The program is on CD and you have to proceed as follows to start it up: go start programs Physical World. The title page will be opened.
Here one can choose between different subsections:
Features and processes
People and their environment
Natural Hazards
Do the following exercises to get to know the program (10 minutes)
Exercise 1.
Open People and their environment and go to Bangladesh from there. Take a look at the materials. Look at slides 1-8 and click the arrow for that. You can also choose between texts.
Answer the questions:
How many people live in Bangladesh? ..
What are the other names used for a cyclone?
What do people cultivate in Bangladesh? ..
Go back to MENU and choose a new subsection.
Exercise 2
Open Natural Hazards and go to Philippine Plate from there.
Bangladesh storm surges.
Which rivers do flow through Bangladesh? ..
Also, watch the video!
Go back to MENU and choose a new subsection.
The number of global environmental problems is very big and different problems are characteristic of different regions. Still, there are also global problems that concern all of us. These are:
Acid rains
Destroyed forests
Greenhouse effect
Destroyed plant species
Increasing number of population
Polluted atmosphere
Energy crisis
Remember all that!
Name: .. Date: .. Grade: .
An independent work
will follow (25 minutes)
To do the exercise, choose subsections of the MENU!
Which environmental problems are acute in the following regions of the world:
Amazon rain forests ..
In the North-Western part of Africa .
What happened in Africa on Lake Nyos in 1986?
What happened in North America, Alaska, in 1964? ...
What did hurricane Gilbert do in the region of Caribbean sea in 1988?
When did the earthquake in Mexico City take place? .
When did the Krakatau volcano eruption in Indonesia take place?
What is Snowdonia? Where is it?
What do you think, what could we do so that the next generations could feel well on the Earth? Think of at least 5 different options!
Summary
The environmental hazards are caused by irresponsible behaviour of people:
Acid rains are caused by chemical compounds that get into the air and are dissolved by air humidity.
Life in water is being damaged by waste water that are guided straight into the nature.
Fertilisers getting into the water will cause bodies of water growing over.
Forests are cut down in excess and thus destroyed.
Layer of ozone is being destroyed because of CFC gasses that get into the air.
Energy crisis can be related to final exhaustion of natural resources.
The climate of the Earth grows warmer because of carbon dioxide that gets into the air.
